What are some facts about Modi ?

 

As a mauritian, I will try to answer this question from a non-indian perspective :

Mauritius and India shares a deep and long historical, political, economic, military, cultural and social relationships. With Mauritius being a multi-cultural, multi-religious, multi-ethnic and multi-lingual country, more than 60% of mauritians are of indian origin and connections between the two countries date back from the 1730's ( then Ile de France). The date of the mauritian independence day (12th march 1968) was set as a remembrence of Mahatma Gandhi's Salt march in 1930 by the father of the nation Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam.

Narendra Damodardas Modi is one of the most popular indian leaders (among A.B Vajpayee, I.Gandhi & A.PJ Kalam) for the mauritian public. He is regarded as the most friendliest and charismatic PM of India since the time of Indira Gandhi. Besides he also shares an excellent relationship with the past and present leaders and other prominent people in Mauritius.

He was invited to be the chief guest of the Independence Day celebrations of Mauritius on 12th March 2015

Some important achievements of  Narendra Modi visit to Mauritus:
 

• Securing the sale of the MCGS Barracuda as an offshore naval patrol vessel to Mauritius. This is Mauritius first warship and India's first indigeniously built warship export in history.
• Helping Mauritius in developing its exclusive-ocean economy zone.
• Signing of several security-pacts.
• Giving a $500 million credit line.
• Permission for the indian military  to set-up military equipment on the mauritian agalega island. (allowing indian military to monitor ALL air and naval traffic across the southern indian ocean and African region)
• Naval partnerships with the mauritian Naval Coasts Guards.
• Training of officers (various institutions) by India.
• Opening up the possibility of setting a naval base on one of the mauritian islands. (Thus increasing the indian military's total overseas bases from 7 to 8).
• Partnership in developing the Agalega island.
• Partnership in building Mauritius 2nd Cybercity
• Cooperation in the building of Mauritius first Smart-cities.
• Securing the 'ocean-economy' economic partnership.
• Assurances in the continuation of the DTA treaty.
• Indians no longer requires a Visa to travel to Mauritius.
• Mauritius supporting India's bid to UNSC seat.
• Mauritius supporting India in its fight against terrorism and piracy.

Thats a remarkable achievement for a PM on his first visit in a country in one day in his first tenure. Thats one heck of  charismatic, diplomatic and political skills that we see here.

 Besides Mauritius, he also travelled to other countries in the indian ocean (Maldive, Sri Lanka, Seychelles) and securing perhaps similar deals. Within ONE week of touring these islands, he nullified China's string of pearls strategy to encirle India. In my opinion, Mr Narendra Modi is the most effective PM in india's history besides Indira Gandhi (mauritius-india relationship was limited only to DTA treaty with the previous indian govt).

Mauritius has also remained the biggest source of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) for India ( investing a total $55.2 billion from 2000-2011) while India has become the largest source of imports for Mauritius in 2015.
