Yes you might have to face anyone in any terrain, no guarantees. Of course just because you are in Syria doesn't mean you are not going to come back safe. I know a friend who lived in Iraq at the height of the Iraq War as a Marine nonetheless, he's come back and retired and lives a happy peaceful life in Scottsdale now.
