The engineering feats of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya

Sir M Visvesvaraya was a Diwan & chief engineer during the 1900s in Mysore. His major feats include-

1. Krishnaraja Sagar dam in Mysore which supplied power to the gold mines at Kolar, irrigation in Mandya district and drinking water in several cities.
2. A flood protection system in Hyderabad & a sewage farm to protect rivers

3. A block system to prevent wasteful flow of water in dams
4. Preventing erosion of the Visakhapatnam port

Patronized by Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV, he was responsible for the setting up of –

1. Mysore soap factory
2. The parasitoid laboratory
3. Mysore sandal oil factory
4. Mysore iron & steel works (now known as Visvesvarayairon and steel limited)
5. Sri Jayachamarajendra polytechnic institute
6. Bangalore Agricultural University
7. State Bank of Mysore
8. The Century Club
9. Mysore Chambers of Commerce
10. Government Engineering College, now called university Visvesvaraya college of engineering

Visvesvaraya achieved celebrity status when he designed a flood protection system for the city of Hyderabad. He was instrumental in developing a system to protect Visakhapatnam port from sea erosion.
