What's so surprising about this. They have regional spelling bees for Indian kids before sending them to national spelling bees. How do I know? Because my niece herself went to the national spelling bee championships. Ikkada desi gallaki idoka way to show their ego and assess their self worth, mee kid ellada Spelling bee maa kid velladu ive discussions desi meetings lo for the most part. Personal ga choose cheputunna. 

Unfortunately these kids aren't encouraged to do anything else apart from attending spelling bees.

How is that showing their ego? When a white man sends his kid to a baseball camp and discusses about that with his friends while fishing or at a bar its cool, or a black man sending his son for a basketball camp and discusses its fine but why is it a problem when a bunch of indians do the same with their kids about spelling bee?

IT is showing their ego. If the kid is genuinely interested in attending spelling bees that's a different matter. But to everything away from him and making him only prepare for spelling bees, is indeed trying to take away all their passion from them just so that these desi parents can get some bragging rights in front of other desi parents. 

As for White kids, they aren't just limited to spelling bees or geography bees. Most of them pursue what they like whether it be baseball, basketball or football if it comes to sports. How many desi kids have you seen playing football, or baseball at the highest levels? I would say the number is closer to zero.
