The franchise films in the US are the equivalent of the routine C grade trash that is manufactured in most of the Indian film Industry.

Corporations like Sony, Time Warner etc simply extend the sequels, combine it with heavy marketing and shove it down the throats of the mindless public. Of course, the mindless public deserves it. 

We are seeing less and less of non-franchise independent movies.
