Andhra Pradesh mulls over extending Metro up to Bhogapuram

VISAKHAPATNAM: Even as the first phase of the Vizag Metro Rail (VMR) project hangs fire in the pre-construction stage, the authorities have come up with a fresh proposal to extend it up to Bhogapuram International Airport.

• As per the project's first phase, which has been officially approved, the VMR will cover a distance of 42.54 km from Gajuwaka to Kommadi in Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) limits. According to the second phase proposal, which is yet to receive official nod, it will be extended to the Bhogapuram airport from Kommadi and to the Vizag Steel Plant from Gajuwaka. The newly added distance will be roughly 37 km.

Speaking to TOI, a senior official from the Amaravati Metro Rail Corporation Limited (AMRC) said, "Yes, we plan to extend the Vizag Metro rail project to the Bhogapuram international airport. However, it is still under consideration. Presently, we are focusing on the implementation of the first phase. The viabilities of the second phase depend on the progress of the Bhogapuram international airport project."

 

When contacted, AMRC managing director NP Ramakrishna Reddy admitted that their focus was now on the first phase of the Vizag Metro rail. While elaborating on the progress of the first phase, Reddy said the state government approved the implementation of the Vizag Metro in public-private partnership (PPP) mode, based on the model prepared by AMRC and the Urban Mass Transit Company Limited (UMTC), a joint company between the Union ministry of urban development and the state government.

Reddy said the total cost of the first phase was approximately Rs 9,000 crore. The state government and the developer would bear the cost in 53:47 ratio. While the government will fund civil works, the private developer will invest in rolling stock, electrical, mechanical works and operation-maintenance of the project for a period of 35 years. The developer will collect the fare and non-fare revenues, Reddy said.
