M@nchu akka laga buid up evvakunda nuvvu ela matladalani anukuntunnavo ala matladu.. Before speaking something frame that sentence and express your words. Don't always try to cut short the discussion.. konchem story allu every conversation. Even i have kind of problem initially. Always type in Inglish even in whatsapp/office communicator/imessages.. this is the good exercise to improve your Inglish speaking skills.

Corporate English is quite different from regular conversation.

Even the native speakers of English fumble and nag in meetings if they don't come prepared. Make sure you come prepared to status meetings. Try to prepare some introduction notes for each topics everyday. Wish everyone as soon as you join the call and ask how their day was.

Don't make your sentences fall flat in to informal phrases. Most offshores desis use imperative voice ( example : what do you think ? Tell me do you want to do today or not ? )

Common phrases like

- are we squared ? Are we clear ? Are we both on same page ?

Desi contractor - I have a doubt !!!?

- need more time to process these pending tasks. These tasks require a second look.

Desi contractor - I will double check and tell you.

- Mike how is the project coming along ?

Offshore Desi manager- tell me the status of task now , why are they pending?

I had the following arrangements which will cover the first item by March 1st.

Desi uncle - I wrote code for this and it will be done by this date.

To sum up, in brief , shall I conclude ?

Desi - The thing is they are......

Very very true

Improving English is a time taking process. Watching a show, listeting to podcast, reading a book etc are going to add fuel to the fire but only you can spark the fire.
It takes effort, self learning and persistence.

Few things that come to my mind, in no particular priority:

  • First try to know the proper pronunciation.
  • Do not focus on slang. There is no need to sound like an American. Focus should be on clear and crisp language. Simple words with decent talking pace make a huge difference in conveying the message. (During any conversation: do not mumble, do not knock off end of the words, do not "ROLL" your Rs too much etc).
  • Punctuation is very important. Try to know when to stop, pause & start a sentence.
  • When writing on a computer try to fix your spellings without using spell check. Fix it till you get it right. This will improve your spellings. Before finalizing any document do a thorough spell check. Whether your job focus is being technical, coding, managerial, business etc - any communication that comes from you should look proper.
  • Try to portray yourself in front of a mirror. Speak in to the mirror without keeping your head down. Try this for a proper 3 minute duration everyday.
  • Toast masters is very useful. No one will teach you English there. Keep that in mind.
  • Go on online forums like quora, reddit, this DB and respond in English. Use this as a medium to improve. If you fumble - get up and try again. Very simple.
  • If you are focusing on reddit, go to those subreddits where you have interest in. Do not simply go to technology forums etc. Everyone will have an interest/hobby. Try to find that out. This will help you develop overall as a person not just in English

If I can be of any help, I will be more than happy to share my thoughts.
