A Maryland Heights apartment building was badly damaged in a Sunday morning fire.

Firefighters from at least 10 departments worked to put out the four-alarm blaze in the three-story building.

The Maryland Heights Fire Protection District received the call about the fire at Woodhollow Apartments at 7:15 a.m.

Residents of 36 apartments were evacuated after the fire started in a second-floor apartment, said Maryland Heights Capt. Robert Daus. The flames went to the third floor of the building, then ran the length of an attic space, he said.

The American Red Cross was on the scene to help 54 people who lived in the building.

At least one person was taken to a hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation, Daus said. Firefighters used ladders to rescue some residents from balconies.
