Plenty of doubt there. It's really weird because there was a spike but except for gloves or bat there was nothing else there. 

The only thing I can think of is that since the field umpire gave it out - the third umpire needed absolute proof to turn the decision over. And since there was a spike as the ball passed - it sealed Vihari's fate.

 

To put it simply - had the on field umpire originally gave it as a not out and then the Aussies reviewed it - it would have stayed not out.
