If its the sale of Ancestral properties, you do not have to pay any taxes in India and here in the US you can save a part of the tax for the money you use for your home down payment (investing in a asset). But the other money you will have to report and might have to pay tax.... but I am not a professional... better talk to a tax consultant. Its a good idea to sell your property to clear CC dues, but at this point if you do not have a GC, i strongly suggest you not to buy a home by selling of properties in India. If you have money here for down payment but DO NOT sell in india to buy a home here. Wait until u get a GC. If you have decided to sell in India to and bring money here, explore the EB5 route, it will buy you peace of mind. Buy on H1 only of u have saved your down payment here. 1 Quote
