(Photo: AP) HIGHLIGHTS A man in Uttar Pradesh, addicted to gambling and alcohol, bet his wife after running out of money After losing the stake, he allowed his friends to gangrape his wife After saying to her, the husband took his wife to his friends and let them rape her again Alcohol and gambling is not a good combination and it has been proven true time and again. This time, in an horrifying incident, a man addicted to gambling and alcohol, bet his wife after running out of money and allowed his friends to gangrape her after losing the stake. The incident took place in Jaunpur district of Uttar Pradesh. After the incident, the victim went to court when the police refused to take action on her complaint. Following a court order, an FIR has been registered in Jaffarabad police station in Jaunpur district. The victim, who lives in the Zafarabad police station area, claimed that her husband was an alcoholic and had put her on stake while gambling. Her husband's friend Arun and relative Anil often used to visit their house for drinking and gambling. One particular day, her husband put her on stake while gambling with Anil and Arun. On losing the stake, Arun and Anil gang-raped her. After the incident, the victim went to her maternal uncle's house. Her husband followed her there, asking for forgiveness and said that it was a mistake. After he apologised, she went back with him in his car. On their way, her husband stopped the car and allowed his friends to gangrape her once again. When the woman complained to police, they refused to file a complaint, following which, the victim approached the court. The court ordered police to register a case of gangrape at first sight, considering the matter as serious. Quote

Well, the Unnao rape case has a similar story- the police were reluctant to register a case and the judiciary (atleast the High court and district courts) was reluctant to set up a bench to hear the case. I cant really blame the police- a friend who had joined the UP state services said that most of the goons are politically connected. So, if the police (or the judiciary) do something they or their kin are bound to get killed. The government has allowed local goons to take law into their own hands. What can the police do ? Quote
