katharnak Posted September 7, 2010 Report Posted September 7, 2010 For those who love Hyderabad’s special dishes like Biryani and Haleem here’s some good news. Haleem, a special dish served only during the month of Ramzan, has been given the Geographical Identity Tag. The tag is given to unique foods, practices etc. to protect and also to encourage them.Ramzan is a special month for those who follow Islam, with almost everyone fasting during the day time, and having food only after an evening prayer. For those living in the Nizam region, Haleem is the most preferred snack, eaten right after the evening prayers.Haleem (also called Daleem or Harees) is a special dish made of meat (beef or mutton or chicken), lentils and other famous Indian and Persian spices. Tens of people work to prepare Haleem, which is cooked for almost 12 hours in a specially built small clay kiln. The resulting paste like food is yummy; with its smell spreading to almost across the street it is cooked.Haleem is popular amongst food loving Hyderabadis, irrespective of their religions. To cater to them, there are special kilns where only mutton or chicken is used instead of beef! Infact Haleem’s popularity has now made it a most wanted delicacy in the US and even the European Union, where NRIs are catered to.With Ramzan festival only few days from now, there would be no better reason to celebrate than Haleem’s new identity tag. Celebrate it with a Haleem!
