It's highway robbery': Price gouging concerns grow as coronavirus spreads in Washington

SHORELINE, Wash. -- More than a $100 for hand sanitizer and over $40 for disinfecting wipes were some of the prices KOMO News found online Monday, a demand all apparently linked to coronovirus concerns.

 

It’s insane, it’s highway robbery (and) somebody has to do something about it,” said one man who didn’t want to be identified, but admitted spending six times the normal cost for a bottle of hand sanitizer.

A week ago, two bottles of Purell hand sanitizer were selling for $35 for 16 ounces, which was two bottles on Amazon.

On Monday morning, the same two 16 ounce bottles were available for $114 through a third-party retailer on the site.

That's 23 times higher than the cost prior to COVID-19 concerns. KOMO News also found 8 ounces of the same hand sanitizer for $2.49 at the online site for Staples.

In a statement, Amazon told KOMO News it has a policy against price gouging and has booted what it calls tens of thousands of "bad actors" from its site.

The online retail giant said it plans to take action against third-party sellers who are found in violation of its price gouging policy.

State regulators say consumers should also not hesitate to seek relief from the Washington Attorney General's office.

"If you are seeing what you think may be price gouging or unreasonable increases in pricing, file a complaint with us," said Audrey Udashen, an assistant attorney general. "It may not be Amazon . . . it may be the retailers. We have to look at individual scenarios to know."

On Twitter, there were a number of consumers posting complaints about online prices.
