Count in Madhya Pradesh rises to 1,407; Indore worst-hit district

 

The number of coronavirus cases in Madhya Pradesh rose to 1,407 with five more people testing positive for the disease on Sunday, PTI quotes authorities as saying. The state also reported three more deaths due to the disease, taking the toll to 72, according to the latest health bulletin. Of these total deaths, 50 have been reported from Indore, the state's industrial hub.

 

The viral disease expanded its footprint to Rajgarh district, which reported one case in last 24 hours. So far, 26 out of the total 52 districts in the state have reported COVID-19 cases. Indore, which has till now reported 890 cases, has been the state's worst hit district.

Russia records 6,060 new cases in 24 hours

Russia on Sunday reported a record rise of 6,060 new corona virus cases over the previous 24 hours, bringing its nationwide tally to 42,853,  Reuters quotes the Russian corona virus crisis response center as saying.

The number of corona virus cases in Russia began rising sharply this month, although it had reported far fewer infections than many western European countries in the outbreak’s early stages.

44 more test positive in Andhra Pradesh, total rises to 647

The number of positive cases in Andhra Pradesh climbed further up on Sunday to 647 in the last 24 hours and the toll to 17, reports PTI. In all, 44 new cases were added to the tally in the last 24 hours ending 9 am on Sunday, as the state government said a record 5,508 tests were carried out during the period. With a total of 65 discharged and 17 deceased, the number of active corona virus cases in the state stood at 565.

Karnataka case count increases to 390, toll reaches 16

Two more COVID-19 related fatalities  were reported in Karnataka, taking the toll in state 16, reports PTI. Six more infections were detected in the state, taking the count to 390, reports The Hindu.  A 65-year old woman, who is a resident of Bengaluru, and a 50-year old woman, who is a resident of Uppinangadi in Dakshina Kannada, with case of Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI), have died on 19 April at designated hospitals in their respective districts, the  health department said in its bulletin.

Curfew won't be relaxed in Punjab till 3 May, says Amarinder Singh

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh stated that no relaxation will be given in the Covid-19 curfew in the state, except as needed to ensure corona virus free procurement of wheat, till 3 May, reports News18. The situation will be reviewed again, he added.

 

However, sand and gravel mining and stone crushing have been permitted as part of the construction-related activities from Monday, according to the state home department. Also in view of the new academic session, shops dealing in distribution of books to school and college students have also been allowed to operate, PTI quotes an official release as saying.In view of approaching summer season, the sale of air-conditioners, air-coolers, fans and their repair shops have also been brought under ambit of essential goods or services and have been allowed to remain open and operate.

In line with the Centre's guidelines, industrial activity is allowed in the state's rural areas and 'dhabas' have also been allowed to remain open but they will serve only packed food, the statement said. However, any activity in the containment zones would continue to be banned, it said.

Jammu and Kashmir reports nine new cases

Nine new cases were reported in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, taking the total in the state to 350, said principal secretary (Planning), Rohit Kansal. Eight in the new cases were detected in the Kashmir division while one person from the Jammu division tested positive, he said.

Total cases in India climb to 16,116

According to the latest update put out by the Union health ministry, the total number of coronavirus cases has reached 16,116 while 2,301 have been cured or discharged and 519 deaths have been reported.  The number of active cases stands at 13,295, it said.

Cop in Delhi, infant in Madhya Pradesh test positive

A police constable with Delhi's Tilak Vihar police station has tested positive for the coronavirus, reports PTI. "His test was conducted on 17 April at the  DDU dispensary in Tilak Vihar and he tested positive on April 18,"  PTI quotes a senior officer  as saying..His family members and his colleagues who came in contact with him have been asked to isolate themselves at home, he said, adding that the constable was "fine and doing well".

Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh reports what could possible be the youngest COVID-19 patient in the state after a 12-day-old girl tested positive in Bhopal. She was born on April 7 and her father said it was possible she got the infection from a woman health worker who was on duty during the birth and tested positive later. Her mother also tested positive, a health officer told PTI.

20 new cases in Dharavi

According to a statement by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Dharavi has recorded 20 new cases on Sunday. The area has recorded 138 coronavirus cases in all, including 11 deaths.

 

Four cops from Dharavi's Shahu Nagar Police Station test positive 

 

Four constables from Shahu Nagar police station, which has jurisdiction over a large part of Dharavi, one of Mumbai's coronavirus hotspots, tested positive

on Sunday, officials said. They have been admitted in an isolation centre in Dadar's Shivaji Park area, they added. "All 70 personnel at Shahu Nagar police station were tested for the virus on 16 April and reports came in today. The four were posted as operator, duty in charge and meal special. Two reside in Mahim police colony while the rest are from Dharavi and Kalyan," an official said.

Haryana case count at 250

A total of 250 COVID-19 cases have been reported in Haryana so far, said the state health department, adding that the number includes 14 foreign nationals, two deaths. 104 people have been cured of the disease so far, it said.

Doubling rate down to 7.4 percent due to lockdown, says Hardh Vadhan

 

Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said the hallmark of India's efforts in dealing with the COVID-19 outbreak has been a pre-emptive and proactive approach as well as creating a people's movement to combat the pandemic. Speaking at a meeting of G20 ministers organised by the grouping's chair Saudi Arabia via video-conferencing, Vardhan said India has completed 25 days of the lockdown which will further extend till 3 May and its positive results were evident. 

 

"The results of the same were realised when our case doubling rate which was about 3.4 days on March 17, dropped to 4.4 days by March 25, and is currently about 7.4 days," he told the G20 health ministers. India has successfully tackled public health emergencies of international concern and pandemic in the past as well, Vardhan asserted.

 

"This time the hallmark of our approach has been fivefold —maintaining a continuous situation awareness; pre-emptive and proactive approach; graded response as per continuously evolving scenario; inter-sectoral coordination at all levels, and lastly but most importantly creating a people's movement to combat this disease," he said.

 

"Our efforts have been preemptive and proactive. We started surveillance of flights from COVID-affected countries twelve days before we even had the first case in India on 30 of January, 2020 ," Vardhan said. By 22 March, with less than 400 cases India banned all international flights to and from India, and by 25 March implemented a nationwide lockdown, he pointed out.

Toll in Gujarat reaches 63

Gujarat reported five more deaths due to COVID-19, taking the toll in the state to  63, PTI quotes health officials as saying. 139 new COVID19 positive cases have been detected, taking the aggregate to 1,743. In all, 367 new cases and 10 deaths have been recorded in a single day, according to The Hindu.

Two more persons tested positive for COVID-19 in Uttarakhand, taking the total to 44.  Eleven persons have been cured and discharged till date, said a health bulletin.

With 433 COVID-19 deaths, Italy records lowest daily toll in a week

Deaths from the COVID-19 epidemic in Italy rose by 433 on Sunday, the lowest daily toll in a week, and the number of new cases also slowed to 3,047 from a previous 3,491,  Reuters quotes the Civil Protection Agency as saying.The death toll had risen by 482 on Saturday, down from 575 on Friday
