More than 20,000 hospital deaths recorded in Britain so far

Britain passed the grim milestone of over 20,000 COVID-19 deaths on Saturday, as the daily toll rose 813 to 20,319 people who tested positive for the illness and died in hospital., reports Reuters.

The country has the fifth highest official corona virus death toll in the world, after the United States, Italy, Spain and France. Scientists have said that the death rate will only start to decline quickly in another couple of weeks.

Sanitation worker in Delhi succumbs to COVID-19

A 57-year-old sanitation worker of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation died due to the coronavirus infection on Satuday, reports Hindustan Times. The man used to lift garbage in Bhogal, Jangpura was on ventilator support at the AIIMS trauma Centre, said the report. At least three other sanitation workers have tested positive for the virus and are admitted to various hospitals in the city.

49 COVID-19 deaths in past 24 hrs take toll to 824

India registered the highest single-day rise in COVID-19 fatalities in the past 24 hours with 49, taking the toll to 824. According to the data released by the Union Health Ministry, a spike of 1,990 fresh cases was witnessed, bringing the overall count to 26,496.

Of the total, 19,868 are active cases while one patient was migrated. The recovery rate stood at 22 percent after 5,804 COVID-19 patients were cured.

Rajesh Tope wants lockdown in Mumbai and Pune to extend, says final call after Modi's meeting with CM

Maharashtra health minister Rajesh Tope on Saturday advocated the extension of the lockdown in the containment areas in Mumbai and Pune regions, which account for 92 percent of the total cases in the state, till 18 May. 

"A discussion on extending the lockdown will be taken in the video conference with the Prime Minister on Monday. But if required, we will extend the lockdown for 15 more days after 3 May. It may only be for the containment zones, if not for all of Mumbai and Pune. A final call will be taken after deliberations on Monday," he said.

Rajasthan reports 2,141 COVID-19 cases after 58 more test positive

With 58 more individuals testing positive for the novel coronavirus in Rajasthan, the overall count in the state climbed to 2,141 on Sunday, said the state health department. 

Of the new cases, 20 were reported in Nagaur, 15 in Jodhpur, 11 in Ajmer, seven in Jaipur, three in Kota, while one each in Hanumagarh and Jhalawar.

31 journalists discharged after recovery

"31 journalists have been discharged today after their second COVID-19 report came negative. All have been advised for 14 days home quarantine," ANI quotes the BMC as saying. As many as 53 journalists were found to have contracted the disease in Mumbai.

Positive cases in Karnataka climb to 503

Three new cases have been confirmed in Karnataka in the last 24 hours, ANI quotes the state government as saying. Cumulatively, 503 COVID19 positive cases have been confirmed in the state, including 19 deaths and 182 discharges.

Iran reports 60 fatalities

The death toll from the new coronavirus outbreak in Iran rose by 60 in the past 24 hours to 5,710, Reuters quotes Health Ministry spokesman Kianush Jahanpur as saying, making it the lowest daily toll recorded in over a month.

Four new COVID19 cases reported today in Bihar, taking the total number of cases in the state to 255, ANI quotes Bihar Principal Secretary (Health) Sanjay Kumar as saying.

Total in Jharkhand crosses 70

 
Six new COVID19 positive cases have been reported in Ranchi — a staff of Sadar Hospital, three persons in  Hindpiri and two in Lowadih have tested positive. Total number of cases in the state has risen to 73, ANI quotes Nitin Madan Kulkarni, State Health Secretary as saying.

402 hotspots identified in Uttar Pradesh as case count reaches 1,843

A total of 1,843 positive COVID-19 cases have been reported till date in Uttar Pradesh, of which 289 cases have been cured/discharged and a total of 29 deaths have been reported till now, ANI quotes Principal Secretary (Health) Amit Mohan Prasad as saying. 

Awanish K Awasthi, State Additional Chief Secretary (Home) said that 402 hotspots have been identified across the state till date and 31,000 vehicles have been seized for violating lockdown norms.

Over 40 staffers at Delhi's Babu Jagjivan Ram hospital test positive

44 staff members at Delhi's Babu Jagjivan Ram hospital have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, reports ANI."Test reports of other staff members are awaited. Hospital's medical services have been closed and hospital is being sanitized," ANI quotes the Delhi health department as saying. Earlier Delhi health minister Satyender Jain had said that the hospitals lies in the Jahangirpuri area where many cases have been reported. Some of the staff too live in this area, he had said.

69 new cases detected in Rajasthan today

69 new cases were reported in Rajasthan today, taking the the overall number so far to 2,152. Of the 69 cases reported today, the highest number was in Jodhpur (23) followed by Nagaur ( 20).

Two persons died to the disease today, taking the toll in the state to 36, ANI quotes the state health department as saying. 518 persons have recovered from the disease so far.

Train services will not resume anytime soon: Uddhav Thackeray 

Train services in Maharashtra cannot be started anytime soon, said Uddhav Thackeray during the briefing on Sunday, adding that such measures can lead to spike in number of corona virus cases. 

Maharashtra successful in curbing multiplication of COVID-19: Uddhav Thackeray 

Uddhav Thackeray mentioned the deaths of two Maharashtra constables who lost their lives due to the novel coronavirus. "Two police constables killed by coronavirus, they were martyred while fighting the virus," said Thackeray. 

The chief minister further stated that the state has been successful in curbing the multiplication of COVID-19. "We have succeeded in stopping the multiplication of corona, we have certainly curbed that growth to some extent," he said. 

Plight of migrant workers' will be addressed by state govt and Centre: Uddhav Thackeray 

Working with both state and central governments to address the plight of migrant labourers, said Uddhav Thackeray, assuring that the issue will be dealt with immediacy. 

"I assure the migrant labourers that I am talking to the Centre and whatever is possible will be done soon," said Thackeray. 

"I am working with state governments and central government on this and also on bringing back Maharashtra students stuck in Kota," he further said. 

Thackeray appreciates efforts of Nitin Gadkari for urging to put united front in fight against COVID 

Uddhav Thackeray expressed gratitude to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari for urging everyone to join forces in Maharashtra by posing a united front in its battle against COVID-19 pandemic without indulging in petty politics. 

"Thank you to Nitin Gadkari for appealing to all to stand behind the Maharashtra government and cooperate without politics, just as all castes and religions are united," said Thackeray. 

80% COVID-19 patients in Maharashtra are asymptomatic: CM

We have 80% of patients who are asymptomatic and 20% are there who have mild, serious or critical symptoms. We have to see how these people are also saved. Those who are hiding it and not getting tested, if you have symptoms please go and get tested, said Uddhav Thackeray.

 

Important to be aware of COVID-19 crisis in Mumbai: Uddhav Thackeray

As soon as we bring relaxation in Mumbai, traffic congestion in the city will increase, said Uddhav Thackeray, stressing on the importance of being aware of the COVID-19 crisis. 

"Even if the pace of COVID-19 growth slows down, don't be ignorant, this is a test of restraint, fortunately 80% of patients do not have symptoms," said Thackeray.
