Moon_Walker Posted April 24, 2020 Report Posted April 24, 2020 Interesting article found on Quora Is it a big mistake to have my child in the US if I am not a citizen there? David Moe, lives in Canadian Rockies (2006-present) Answered Jan 23, 2018 It might be a big mistake. I am Canadian and friend of mine had a son born in the US while she was living there. Now, they have been living in Canada for decades, but her son is now an adult suffering from schizophrenia. He can’t hold a steady job because of his mental problems, so Canadian medicare is paying for his treatment, and the Canadian welfare system is paying for his living expenses. However, the US government thinks he should pay taxes to the US even though he does not live in the US, is incapable of working for a living, and is not really capable of filing a tax return without professional (psychiatric and accounting) help. Because of US tax authority resistance, his mother has been trying to revoke his US citizenship for years, with little success. The US is the only country (other than Eritrea) which taxes people on the basis of citizenship rather than residency. Other countries simply assume that if you don’t live there, you are not getting government services from that country, and shouldn’t have to pay taxes to them. Everywhere else you pay taxes to the government of the country where you live. Everywhere else, the government pays for your medical care, too, if you pay taxes to them. The US is the only developed country that does not have a universal medical care system. However, the US thinks you might somehow evade the clutching grasp of the American tax system, so American citizenship has become like leprosy - you can’t get rid of it without professional help. If you don’t expect your child to want to live in the US, don’t inflict US citizenship on them, and keep in mind, just because they have a right to live there, it doesn’t mean you do, too. Donald Trump is trying to make this very, very difficult for you. They call it “chain migration” in the US. In Canada we call it “family reunification”. Quote
