Over a dozen House Republicans urge Trump to veto omnibus spending bill: report
 

More than a dozen House Republicans reached out to President Trump to urge him to veto a $1.4 trillion omnibus spending billbeing hammered out in Congress, slamming it as an example of “swamp politics,” according to a report.

The letter, sent to the White House on Wednesday and obtained by Fox News, calls it a “take-it-or-leave-it bill, negotiated behind closed doors” that “expands government, spends at record levels well above 2011 base cap levels, and funds unnecessary or even harmful federal programs.”

Negotiations on the omnibus bill are expected to continue Thursday as Congress faces a midnight Friday deadline to pass the spending measure to prevent a government shutdown.

Legislators are also working out the final details of a coronavirus relief plan.

Fox reported that a proposal exists to top the $1.4 trillion omnibus bill with the $900 billion coronavirus aid to create a new measure with a $2.3 trillion price tag.

But the effort faces hurdles because lawmakers would have to familiarize themselves with the huge bill as time is running out.

The letter from the 14 GOP House members — including Reps. Louie Gohmert of Texas, Steve King of Iowa, Chip Roy of Texas and Andy Biggs of Arizona — argues that the omnibus bill would add more debt to the $27.5 trillion “we already owe.”

They say House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is pushing through a massive spending bill that “fully funds an agenda rejected by the American people” and note that her Democratic majority shrank after the 2020 election.

Claiming they have been cut out of the legislative process, the Republicans said the bill should be punted to the new Congress convening in January to allow full participation.
To stave off a government shutdown, they suggest passing a short-term continuing resolution.

The letter also urges Trump to remember his comments in 2018 after signing another omnibus bill.

“I will never sign another bill like this again. I’m not going to do it again. Nobody read it. It’s only hours old. Some people don’t even know what is in — $1.3 trillion — it’s the second-largest ever,” the letter said, quoting the president.

“This bill promises to be even larger, exemplifying everything that is wrong with the swamp politics of Washington, D.C.,” the lawmakers said.
