Sachin received a Farrari Medna 360 Modena from FIAT ( of which he was brand ambassador in India at that time) in 2003 for breaking Bradman's record of 29 Test centuries. It was presented to him by none other than Michael Schumacher, wh was the Formula 1 driver for Ferrari at that time.The original price of this Ferrari at that time was INR 75 Lacs. The duty( custom. import, excise) that was to be paid on the car was 1.1 cr.( 120%). Sachin requested for waving off this duty to the Indian Government. The government decided to waive off the duty. End to the Controversy: Finally FIAT India decided to pay the whole tax amount. But this incident really made a dent on the reputation that Sachin had. It was one of the first controversies that Sachin was involved in. Still whenever Sachin makes a record on the field, the Sachin haters( Like @Raazu) refer to this incident as a point to argue. That he put a burden on the tax payers. But that's not true. Import duty or custom duty is the extra money that our government charges when something is imported from outside India, so that people start to buy the goods made in India and help the economy (Also the duty of 120% is humongous). None of the tax payers lost money in this case. Even if Ferrari wold not have paid for it, none of the tax payers would pay for it.
