But I am going to ask them in the interviews itself going ahead what their expectations are 1 month from the time I join 6 months from the time i join 1 year into my job If they don't know the answer to any of those, it's better to not waste time with such places. these are common questions eh to ask the ppl who interview you or when you join a team. The expectation as they mentioned was for someone to join and understand their build and release process as it exists now, and be able to improve/automate it as much as possible. I just didn't realize that they were expecting that to happen in a month. I realized they don't even understand what proper DevOps means. Quote

zarathustra Posted April 21, 2021 Author Report Posted April 21, 2021 One more thing I have to mention here: When I was first interviewed for this role, he said he was going to retire in a few months and he needs someone to step into his shoes and work with the Development director, the dev director btw has a horrible vietnamese accent and is hard to understand at times. He seems like a nice enough guy so I got nothing against him but it's hard to understand him at times. However when I joined the company I asked him about his retirement he mentioned, but the director then said he changed his mind and wasn't going to retire as he planned to. He also said this on the first day itself which raised a red flag in my mind, his words were "Let's see where we can try to fit you into the company now that you are here". That felt very uneasy to me, because it almost seems like they are trying to find work for me after hiring me instead of it being the other way round. Quote
Popular Post kakatiya Posted April 21, 2021 Popular Post Report Posted April 21, 2021 These are my life lessons Rule 1: never work under non technical boss, unless there is a tech manager or tech team lead to cover your a$$ Rule 2: all non technical managers these days want everyone to do automation to save cost to hire new team members + save on user acceptance testing Tell your client you either build automation platform or run the operations not both at same time.. Rule 3: corp to hire ..apply full time after enjoying corp to corp or else resign and try corp to hire some where.. Rule 4 : small clients , small team size expect you to work on everything.... Never join such clients...unless you are opt Make sure you write to hr nicely saying you did this much in two months and you expect no negative feed back if required ... It was never communicated nor the directions where clear ... 2 1 Quote

We are not slaves ...witch companies better. These british mentality is why he hired you, assuming it is easy to fire a desi...and he did it with great comfort.. Write to hr on last day ..stating your role was never there from day1..despite delivering I was encouraged to self resign .. this is one of the greatest lesson learnt ..despite being microsoft contractor for these many years..I moved to sacramento to start it all new ...and this is complete let down.. I am pretty sure he has hired someone to work for him in texas or florida 1 Quote

I report to the director and I'm his only reporter, also he's a QA director and doesn't seem to understand what's a dev/application issue vs what's a devops related issue. Rule 4 applies perfectly in this case. He already mentioned that he will give me a favorable review if I need it so that's not an issue. Quote

All my official email access has been taken away so I'm not sure how to email her unless I do it from my personal email address. I rejected other offers for this role which I should have accepted and yes it's my loss. Quote

Ask him to drop a great review for your performance..talk to him nicely that this is a great jolt .. You can explain next client that role was taken back due to budget issues/covid and extending the directors retirement. But I will warn you..all the devops role require too much ansible and playbooks automation these days.. so make sure you either go for operations or do ansible automatic....but not both 1 Quote

Popular Post zarathustra Posted April 29, 2021 Author Popular Post Report Posted April 29, 2021 Update on this issue: HR reached out to me today after I sent her a lengthy email detailing everything that happened during my employment at the company. She accepted that the director was at fault here and that sometimes they aren't the best at conveying what they would need, said they are willing to take me back. But nene alochistunnanu now it's kinda personal because the director probably never expected me to fight back and complain to the HR about my thoughts but since I have done that now, he's in the red and in the spotlight for the wrong reasons now. However, ippudu nenu tirigi vellina I feel he will try to target me more and point me in the negative whenever and wherever possible since it's a personal thing for him now onwards. I am thinking I will ask the HR to put me in a different team with a different reporting structure if they have a role similar to this, if they don't and can't do that then see if they could pay me more severance. My future in this company is non existent anyway as 1) The director I reported to has been working here since 23 years and I am sure even the other team members are going to side with him over a newbie like me (2) Most of the other directors and such are also people that have been here for 15-20 years, mostly antha musali thellollu so they will support each other (3) the tech stack is outdated and it won't help my career, I have already started looking for other opportunities and got a few interviews setup already. Is it best to just move on? That's what I think I would like to do. Suggest what you feel. @RedThupaki@Amrita@Shameless @Sarvapindi 1 3 Quote
