I was nowhere in the picture when the army went through the process of acquiring the caskets. The purchases were cleared at the level of the defence secretary. I learnt about the transaction only when the matter was raised in Parliament after the CAG report was submitted.”

Interestingly in consecutive UPA governments’ tenure, CBI filed its initial report and gave George Fernandes a clean-chit and absolved him of any involvement or wrongdoings in ‘Coffin Gate’.

I read somewhere, Indian army lo chanipoina soldiers ki very cheap material coffins lo transport chesevallu....so they decided we should give proper respect and replace them with expensive coffins like how US does to their soldiers. Anduke US lo high end vi theppincharu and coffins are very expensive indeed. Anduke ah rate and obviously if you compare with low end model, it was few time high.....daani scam ani tag chesaru and that too hardly a scam (less than 10cr Rs)

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered a case in June 2006 registered a case under sections 420 (cheating), 120 B (criminal conspiracy) and the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. The CBI filed a charge sheet in August 2009. Three major Indian Army officers and a company based in the United States were named in the charge sheet. The three Army officers named were Major General Arun Roye, Colonel SK Malik and Colonel FB Singh. Victor Baiza, a US National who supplied the aluminium casket and body bags to the Indian Army was also named in the charge sheet. However, the then defense minister George Fernandes was not included in the report and was later given a clean chit from the scam.

In December 2013, a special CBI court found no evidence and hence discharged all the accused.

In a veiled reference to the presumptive loss to the exchequer — at one stage, the Comptroller and Auditor General pegged it at Rs 176,000 crore — in the grant of 2G licences, Saini said “some people created a scam by artfully arranging a few selected facts and exaggerating things beyond recognition to astronomical levels” and “a huge scam was seen by everyone where there was none”.

In 2017 a special CBI court on Thursday acquitted all 18 accused including A Raja and K Kanimozhi in 2G spectrum allocation case.
