In 1940s there was a civil war in china between communists and the ruling party called KMT. Communists won but KMT managed to escape to Taiwan and set up govt there. Communists had no navy then and also KMT had america' s support. So basically a ceasefire of an internal civil war started.  America officially recognized communist china as china only much later.

Taiwan is called republic of china and officially Taiwan claims whole of china including india's arunachal pradesh, doklam and ladakh as its own.   china officially claims Taiwan as its own. Now officially most of the world recognized taiwan as part of china. But this is only legal recognition. Factually speaking taiwan is run by its own military and political parties and china as no de facto control on Taiwan.

So question is will china take military action to take full control of taiwan and close the civil war. N o one knows when. Pelosi visit gave china reason to be angry and "do something". But no one knows what it will be.
