Logic behind it:

It's a symptom of the opponent-process theory of color recognition. Basically, color receptors in your eyes are paired, and when one gets exhausted from detecting a stimulus for too long and you suddenly let it rest, your opposite color that is bound to that color receptor keeps firing, allowing you to see a correct after image.
