stepping on the grass with bare feet is overly stimulating for their sensory system, so they try to avoid it.

There are certain doormats that make adults feel the same way to step on them, stepping/rubbing your feet on those doormats is not going to hurt, but it is so overwhelmingly stimulating/tingling/irritating and we hate that feeling.
