All telecom have legacy systems... they acquired hundreds of companies over the years and due to regulations etc, each state/city/county may be operated by a subsidiary etc. At the end, they run batch jobs to generate usage and billing etc.. trust me very , very complicated. ATT and Verizon lobbied to stop competition from last few decades. We should be thankful to t-mobile -- they kicked the butts and forced both to lower prices a bit and improve customer experience. Yes, t-mobile coverage in few places is bad but they vastly improved. Their 5G based home internet is viable option for many. Quote
