Ee sari World Cup evariki fix chesarantaru? 2011 India ki fix chesarantagaaaa!

Disappointing also a bit amusing: Kumar Sangakkara on being questioned over 2011 World Cup fixing claims

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Kumar Sangakkara was recently questioned by the police over 2011 World Cup fixing claims made by former Sri Lanka Sports Minister
  • 2011 World Cup final was fixed, claimed former Sri Lanka Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage
  • The Sri Lankan police dropped the investigation and cleared all selectors and cricketers of fixing allegations after no evidence was found

Former Sri Lanka Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage sparked a huge controversy last month when he made a shocking claim about 2011 ICC World Cup final between India and Sri Lanka being fixed. India had defeated Sri Lanka by six wickets in the thrilling final which was played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. India became the first team to win a World Cup on home soil as they brought an end to a 28-year-long wait for a second World Cup crown with a memorable win.

Aluthgamage, who was Sri Lanka's Sports Minister in 2011, claimed that his country 'sold' the final to India. His bizarre claim nine years after the World Cup final saw a massive controversy erupted in Sri Lanka cricket as the likes of Kumar Sangakkara, Upul Tharanga and former chief selector Aravinda de Silva were questioned by a special investigation team after the Sri Lankan government launched an investigation into the matter.

While Sangakkara was the captain of the Sri Lankan side which lost to India in the final of the 2011 World Cup, former captain De Silva was the head of the selection committee. Sangakkara recently opened up on being questioned in the probe and admitted it was disappointing but he insisted that it was healthy for the integrity of the game.

“It is disappointing and also a bit amusing at times. And we had that recently when the ex-sports minister did quite a frivolous claim and we had to go in and answer questions,” Sangakkara was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

“Actually, to go through and answer those questions, and making those statements was really really healthy for the game, whether it was me, the selectors, Mahela or anyone else. I think that process is really important for people to understand what respect for the game means,” the former Sri Lanka captain added.

There were protests witnessed outside Sri Lanka Cricket's headquarters after Sangakkara was questioned with fans criticising the government for 'harassing' their heroes over false allegations. The Sri Lanka police closed the probe and cleared all selectors and cricketers of allegations as no evidence was found to prove Aluthgamage's claims.
