What chinese thought about Rabindranath Tagore

Featured Replies

The Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore lyrically described Asia’s communities as organic and spiritual in contrast with the materialism of the West. As Tagore spoke of the liberatory powers of art, his Chinese listeners scoffed. The Chinese poet Wen Yiduo, who moved to Kunming during World War II and is commemorated with a statue at Yunnan Normal University in Kunming, wrote that Tagore’s work had no form: “The greatest fault in Tagore’s art is that he has no grasp of reality. Literature is an expression of life and even metaphysical poetry cannot be an exception. Everyday life is the basic stuff of literature, and the experiences of life are universal things.”

If Tagore’s Bengali modernism championed a spiritual lens for life rather than the materiality of Western colonialists, Chinese modernists decided that only by being more materialist than Westerners could they regain sovereignty. Mao had said rural deprivation was “一穷二白” — poor and empty; Wen accused Tagore’s poetry of being formless. Hegel sneered that Asia had no history, since the same phenomena simply repeated themselves again and again — the cycle of planting and harvest in agricultural societies.

For modernists, such societies were devoid of historical meaning in addition to being poor and readily exploited. The amorphous realm of the spirit was for losers, the Chinese May 4th generation decided. Railroads, shipyards and electrification offered salvation.

Haha correct ga catch chesinav.

are you now going to claim that India is not materialist now? lmao.

anyway Tagore's main criticism on materialism has to do with how nationalism, and imperialism follows it. It was true of the western nations in the early 20th century, and its true of China now.

Tagore at his core is an anti-nationalist. He thought nation is a disgrace. especially he described India's nationalism as 'organized selfishness' that is alien to the Indian civilization.

In his view, no country is greater than the ideal of humanity.

actually it is you who doesn't have a grasp of reality. Why do you think Modi got elected twice and is on course for a 3rd?

upper caste Indians always had an understanding of what power is. Increasingly lower caste indians have learned to deal with power. It is only for this reason that muslims are being scapegoated in India by both upper and lower castes.

it is how Indians chose to build their nation. You may scoff at it. Your own telugu people will laugh at you if you talk of power outside the Indian union. power as telugus they understand, but they can't imagine it outside of india.

I think Indians are a joke. Let them rot. perhaps they'll change in the future, until then fcuk them. fcuk the murderous nation they are building.

given how China turned out, Tagore was right.

don't say Tagore was Indian patriot. He thought Indian union was a bad idea. He even wrote about it.

Indian "chose" jack$hit. You remain as clueless as always.

India is a british bureacracy - thats all. Upper caste indian "power" is really bigotry nothing else.

Regarding telugus whatever.  Get this in to your THICK mind - i dont represent telugus not i am their spokesperson idiot.

I share my observations and insights. it is up to telugus what they do.

The only difference i make between india and telugus is that telugu is more meaningful identity. A laguage is a material thing and sharing a language actually means something. Thats why you and me and that halwa are in the SAME forum. because we share a language.

Indians are neither materialist nor sipritual. They are bankrupt in both spheres.

Rabindranath is another gasbag like most "indians" are.
