Whatsapp Calls Disturb Telecom Operators

Whatsapp has finally enabled the 'Voice Calling' feature on its Android App and the users doesn't require any more invites to activate this on their mobile phone. Whether this most-awaited-feature of Whatsapp was rolled out permanently or its just a temporary one is yet to be confirmed by the company.

So, from today - the 70 million Indian users of Whatsapp can use the Internet to call their nearest ones instead of using their mobile calls. Digging deeper into the data consumption patterns, it is revealed that a 5 minute call of Whatsapp consumes 1 MB of 3G data or 2MB of 2G data. For mobile users who doesn't have a Data Plan activated, Whatsapp calling might cost 1 rupee per each minute on 3G networks and around 2.50 rupees on 2G networks!

With this, the customer base of Whatsapp might increase in multiple folds and the Mobile Service Providers will be the most concerned party here. If the roll-out becomes official, the group of Telecom Operators in India might approach the court to protect from the revenue-losses caused by the In-App Calling feature of Whatsapp. In the end, the customer will be on the winning end with a huge price drop in call rates
