H1B  valid until OCT 2017. company  applied for GC and labor approved. I140  in process. If I switch firms, can I maintain my original priority date ? Is it better to wait until my I140 is approved ?

No need to wait for 6 months...that rule is only after you apply 485...bUT anyways to answer your questions: yes it is mandatory for you in your case to wait until your 140 approval to retain your PD...you can request for premium processing by paying the PP fees if your employer does not in urgency...
