Most of them end up becoming enemies, the moment you ask them to pay back.  Old people in villages are far better than these educated friends when it comes to these kind of things: fake friendships to just use you.

That's why, get your money back, and cut them off. Even when you ask for some help (like forwarding a resume to their manager), they will say "we don't have any openings", while sending a resume of some girl to their boss. That's how people are.
