Hours after Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee dealt a blow to Congress by declaring to go it alone in the Lok Sabha polls in Bengal, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, too, attacked the fellow INDIA bloc member by questioning the erstwhile UPA governments at the Centre for not responding to his repeated requests to confer Bharat Ratna to socialist leader Karpoori Thakur.
Nitish also attacked dynastic politics while praising PM Narendra Modi for his government's decision to confer the country's highest civilian award to the pioneer of quota politics.

Addressing a rally organised by JD(U) here on Karpoori's centenary birth anniversary, Nitish said: "Right since coming to power (in Bihar) in 2005, I kept on requesting the governments at the Centre for this (Bharat Ratna) till 2023. Ultimately, the present (Narendra Modi) government fulfilled my demand for which I thank both the central government and PM Modi."

"I have been told by Ramnath Thakur (Karpoori's son and MP) that the PM called him up. However, he (PM) did not call me. I would like to extend my thanks to him (PM) nonetheless, through mediapersons. I would like to say to him, 'You may take credit without taking into account what we did'."

On dynastic politics, Nitish said: "These days, many people are more focussed about promoting their own family in politics, but Karpoori ji never did that in his life." He said taking an inspiration from Karpoori, "I also have never promoted my own family; rather I care about pushing others from the party." Nitish added that he promoted Karpoori's son Ramnath Thakur only after the socialist leader's demise.

Interestingly, Nitish's alliance partner RJD organised a separate function here to celebrate Karpoori's birth centenary which was addressed by its chief Lalu Prasad and his son and deputy CM Tejashwi Prasad Yadav.

Analysts interpreted Nitish's observations on dynastic politics as an indirect reference to ally Lalu Prasad who has been criticised for promoting 'parivarvad' in politics. Currently, five members of Lalu's family are in active politics. While his wife Rabri Devi is an MLC and served as the CM in the past, their eldest daughter Misa Bharti is an MP. Both the sons of Lalu-Rabri, Tejashwi and Tej Pratap Yadav, are ministers in the present government.

Prashanth Kishore once said that, In Bihar, whichever party wins the elections, Nitish Kumar will always be the chief minister. 😄
