Not sure about the reason but my father used to say jonnalu were major part of diet during their childhood. Maybe merging of state had an impact and rice is easier to grow after green revolution? Should ask my father next time I call why it changed.

In rural Telangana, at least in southern parts...Usually afternoon meal rice tinetollu...morning and night millets-based meal. Agriculture lo kuda drylands la first crop in the season usually millets vuntayi even now...the crop is like sow and harvest, minimal rainfall and morning mist chalu crop harvest ki vachestadi...minimum la minimum 1 acre millets cultivate chesukunetollu for household consumption.
