A fresh plea filed in the Supreme Court has sought to restrain the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Central government from appointing a Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and Other Election Commissioners (EC). The appointment of two Election Commissioners by the government is expected later this week.

The plea filed by Congress leader Jaya Thakur alleges that the new law on the appointment of CEC and ECs is against free and fair elections. Thakur, a Congress leader from Madhya Pradesh, has filed a petition in the top court citing a 2023 judgment to restrain the BJP government from appointing the ECs.
