How to automatically grayscale your iPhone at sunset

What is Grayscale?

Grayscale is a setting on the iPhone that allows you to remove all of the vibrant colors from the device. While colorful displays make views on your pleasant to look at, they unfortunately also make the device more addicting. Grayscaling your phone is a great way to decrease the amount of dopamine released when you open apps on your phone and decrease overall usage. In this article we will cover how you can set up a shortcut that automatically flips your phone into grayscale at sunset every day. If you are looking for a way to simply turn your phone to grayscale without an automation you can find instructions on doing just that here.

Why Grayscale?

Turning your iPhone to grayscale is one of the quickest and simplest ways to promote healthier interaction with your device. Grayscale strips away the eye-catching allure of vibrant colors, which apps use to keep users engaged, reducing the 'digital dopamine' that often leads to addictive scrolling and excessive screen time. The lack of color can make the device less stimulating, helping to curb device usage and promoting an overall healthier amount of screen time engagement.

Steps to automate grayscale mode at sunset

Quick Steps

  1. Open the Shortcuts app
  2. Select the Automation tab
  3. Tap Create Personal Automation or the '+' button in the upper right corner.
  4. Tap Time of Day in the Automation list
  5. Select Sunset then tap Next
  6. Tap Add Action
  7. Search for 'Set Color Filters' and tap it.
  8. Confirm color filters 'On', tap Next
  9. Toggle Ask Before Running Off, confirm 'Don't Ask' in the pop up, then tap Done

At sunset 🌄 your phone will now automatically flip to grayscale mode.

If you want to be able to toggle it on and off easily, you can create a simple shortcut: (1) Settings (2) Accessibility (3) Accessibility Shortcut (4) Color Filters
