NEW DELHI: The Indian textile and clothing industry is witnessing severe labour crunch since many of them are moving to other well-paying jobs or going back home in the rural areas, said industry body the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM).

The textile industry is facing immense challenge in getting extra workers to fufill the production needs since many of them have been moving to the other fast-growing sectors. The crisis situation comes when India is fast losing the competitive edge in the export markets due to the surging input costs. Presently, India is facing strong competition from neighbouring nations such as Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia and China.

Currently, the main importers of textiles and garments – the European Union and the United States – have not completely recovered the global economic recession and also the potential buyers are not ready to pay even five cents a piece more, said ASSOCHAM.
