VIJAYAWADA: The proposal to convert the Guntur civic body into a greater municipal corporation has been put on the fast track but Vijayawada's route to the same status, it seems, is fraught with problems after it has emerged that Congress leaders in the area are stonewalling plans to develop the city.
The merger of about 30 villages with the city civic body has for long been on the cards and it was assumed that it would be done following the expiry of the terms of the village panchayats, which happened a year back. However, authorities of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) have failed to take the matter forward. Sources said Congress legislators fear that the merger would pave the way for Telugu Desam Party (TDP)'s dominance in the council.
