HYDERABAD: Medical Council of India (MCI) had received complaints against some private colleges regarding illegal sale/purchase of MBBS seats, even before the admission test was conducted. MCI had brought this to the notice of the Government of Andhra Pradesh, which had formed a committee that investigated into allegations of sale of PG and MBBS seats in private medical colleges and has reported severe irregularities and flaws in the admission process.
The team is headed by Dr K Vishnu Prasad, director of medical colleges, and other members consist of three principals from government medical colleges. The committee has analysed the entire process of admission to MBBS and PG medical seats under management quota in private colleges and reported several flaws.
In order to maintain transparency, the committee suggested that NTR University of Health Sciences, which controls admissions in the private colleges, should direct those involved in severe irregularities, to call for fresh applications from the candidates. It is reported that the private medical college managements have sold one MBBS seat for around Rs.50 lakh and one PG seat for up to Rs.1.5 crore last year, earning nearly Rs.610 crore through such donations.
