HYDERABAD: Amid rising criticism for failing to quell protests over bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, the Congress party has changed tack and will tread very cautiously on the Telangana process, according to senior lawmakers and party leaders.

Worried that any quick move can further worsen the situation in Seemandhra and rub its cadre the wrong way there, the Congress party has slowed down the process of forming Telangana, they claimed.

In Parliament, the Congress withdrew its resolution to suspend protesting Seemandhra MPs, both from Congress and Telugu Desam, and instead requested Speaker Meira Kumar to invoke rule 374 (A) and play safe.

"This was done after the high command discussed the issue with senior MPs and the chief minister. By invoking 374 (A) to suspend some MPs, the party escaped from being blamed for the suspension of Seemandhra members," a senior MP told TOI.

Sources said the next step on Telangana would only happen after the AK Antony committee submits its report, giving ample evidence that the process must be delayed to soothe Seemandhra nerves. On Monday, two TDP MPs from Rajya Sabha were barred by the deputy chairman of the Upper House PJ Kurien, who again invoked special provision under rule 255, which gives the chairman a right to bar any member for disorderly conduct.

Congress leaders believe these are all signs of the Congress adopting a go slow policy.

"This is a clear indication that the Congress does not want to bruise the feelings of Seemandhra region. It will resolve all contentious issues related to Hyderabad, water sharing between both regions before it makes the next move," said Botsa Satyanarayana, PCC president.

Botsa says he also wrote a letter to Parliamentary affairs minister Kamal Nath to withdraw the suspension on eight Congress MPs from Seemandhra region and believes that the request would be honoured.
