RTC Complex cleaned up:

With a view to creating public awareness on cleanliness in line with the mission of ‘Swachh Bharat’, members of CII’s Young India (Vizag Chapter) and Yellow Bin participated in a cleanliness drive at the busy RTC Complex here on Wednesday. Donning gloves and face masks, a team of 40 people cleaned the complex and the open sewage line opposite the GVMC office while highlighting the need for keeping the area and buses clean. The initiative was held to create an ecosystem of volunteerism in the country and mark the National Volunteering Week. “As a gesture of gratitude for the sweepers who toil in the nights to keep the city clean, we went around various areas in the cities in the night and thanked the workers for their service. We have lined up some events for the days ahead to highlight the objective of ‘Swachh Bharat’,” said former chair of Yi Vizag chapter Poonam Shah Srinath.

A poster-quote-poem competition on the theme of ‘Swachh Bharat’ will be held on Thursday for students of municipal and private schools. The posters will be displayed at Visakha Museum on Friday. Students of St. Joseph’s Convent and GVP College will be presenting a skit opposite Kali Temple at Beach Road on Friday as part of the awareness campaign. Apart from this, a clean-up drive will also be taken up in St. Joseph’s Convent.

Free Wi-Fi, website for 'smart city' Vizag

VISAKHAPATNAM: To fast track the smart city initiative, the Union ministry of urban development has directed state government agencies such as the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC), Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority (Vuda) and the district administration to develop a common website to feature all departments.

At the same time, joint secretary from the Union urban development ministry, Praveen Prakash, has asked GVMC to identify free Wi-Fi zones within its limits to take the smart city initiative forward, said sources. Incidentally, Praveen Prakash served as Visakhapatnam collector for nearly two years between 2004 and 2006 and later returned to the city as AP Eastern Power Distribution Company Limited (APEPDCL) CEO for one year.

These directions were given by Praveen Prakash during a roundtable meeting held between representatives of 25 major US companies and AP government officials in the city on Friday to chart out a roadmap for the smart city initiative.

"The memorandum of understanding on the smart city project has been finalised after deliberations between the US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) and AP government. In the coming days, the Union urban development ministry will coordinate with US-India Business Council and the AP government to kick-start the initiatives and identify pilot projects."

"All government departments have been asked to share a common website so that citizens get all information on what is happening in the city from one source. The smart city in-charge officer for AP, Praveen Prakash, has also asked GVMC, Vuda and the district administration to identify areas that are likely to need to investments and come up with concrete proposals in the coming month," said a Vuda official.

Meanwhile, during Friday's meeting between USIBC and AP government officials, Diane Farrell, acting-president of USIBC, led the representatives from 25 major US companies, including 3M, AECOM, Applied Materials, CH2MHill, Cisco, Dow, GE, Hospira, IBM, Microsoft, and United Technologies Corporation, in detailed discussions with central and state government officials on creating a roadmap for developing Vizag as a smart city, as articulated in the joint statement between US President Barack Obama and Prime Pinister Narendra Modi in September last year.
