SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — One tweet. Two words. Eight-month high.

Tesla Motors Inc. shares TSLA, -1.00%  on Tuesday chalked up their biggest one-day rise since late February after CEO Elon Musk tweeted that September sales hit a “record high” worldwide and North American sales were up 65% from September of last year.

The tweet appeared to dispel concerns that Tesla sales were in decline, particularly in North America — where some fret the market for the electric-car maker is becoming saturated.

Tesla does not disclose monthly sales figures as other car makers do, which helps explain the attention that Musk’s tweet garnered. Tesla discloses its deliveries when it posts quarterly results.

Musk’s tweet came in direct response to a report in the Wall Street Journal about Tesla’s newly announced lower-cost lease program. Citing the trade publication WardsAuto.com, the report said sales of Tesla’s Model S sedan are declining in North America.
