Knowledge City to come up in Vizag   HYDERABAD: The AP Cabinet on Saturday cleared the proposal for establishing an integrated Knowledge City in Visakhapatnam.

Briefing media after the Cabinet meeting, information minister Palle Raghunath Reddy said the Knowledge City will come up on 1,750 acres at Kapulapadu village in Bheemunipatnam mandal of Visakhapatnam district. The project will give an advantage to Andhra Pradesh in terms of knowledge-building capabilities.

The Cabinet has also decided to take up e-Pragati project at a cost of Rs 1,300 crore to provide services of 77 government departments to the common man. The AP government will execute the e-Pragati project in association with the Singapore government and Wipro.

Another major decision taken at the meeting was to provide free power to farmers for seven hours a day. The minister said chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu will make an announcement on free power for farmers during the "Chandranna Yatra", which will be held between September 9 and 29.

"The e-Pragati project will bring digitization to all departments. It will be taken up under public-private partnership (PPP) mode. As many as 745 e-services will be provided," the minister said.

The Cabinet also decided to pool 14,000 acres for Machilipatnam port. It gave the nod for allocation of nine acres to Saptagiri power project in Srikakulam. As much as 2,094 acre land is available with Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation. This will be given to Kakinada special economic zone in Tondangi mandal.

According to sources, the Cabinet discussed in detail about the need to shift government offices from Hyderabad to Vijayawada. However, Naidu was upset with the performance of ministers and MLAs during the recent assembly session. "When I am speaking, you should not sit quiet. You must also be active" he reportedly told the ministers.
