HYDERABAD: Against the backdrop of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressing displeasure over the Centre’s firm no to accord special status to Andhra Pradesh, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has again claimed that the Centre is lending a helping hand to the reorganised State on all fronts, besides giving more funds to it.

Stating that it was the UPA government which bifurcated AP, Jaitley said despite this, the Centre was fulfilling all promises made to the residuary State during bifurcation. Replying to a debate on the Finance Bill 2016 in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, Jaitley said as AP had to start afresh, build a capital and institutions, the Centre was extending all possible assistance to the State.

While listing out funds released to the State in the past 22 months, Jaitley chose to remain silent on the issue of according ‘special category status’ to AP. “We have been releasing additional funds periodically to the State ever since its bifurcation. AP has been given all sorts of assistance. We have released funds for the Polavaram project also and we will continue to release funds for the project as it is a national project,” Jaitley said.

Stating that `2,050 crore had been given for the construction of new capital city, Jaitley said so far `6,403 crore had been given to AP to fulfil promises made in the Reorganisation Act.
