Dipa Karmakar gets a rousing welcome in Agartala

Dipa made promise at a felicitation ceremony in Agartala that she would win an Olympic medal in the 2020 Tokyo Games. She also asserted India should cut its dependence on foreign coaches in sports.

Ace gymnast Dipa and her coach were accorded a grand welcome on Monday. After a rousing reception at the airport, they were taken to Vivekananda Stadium in a motorcade.

She and coach Bishweshwar Nandi travelled in an open-top vehicle as thousands, mostly students, cheered her arrival.

Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, Ministers was among those who took part in the event. The Chief Minister announced a job promotion and cash prize for Dipa and her coach.

School Education Minister Tapan Chakraborty announced all colleges and schools would remain close on Tuesday as a mark of appreciation for what Dipa had achieved at the Rio Games...See more http://goo.gl/PWnEMc
