Once home to 40,000 monks, nuns, and disciples, it has now become a site of conflict. In the summer of 2016, the Chinese government demolished a large swath of the homes, citing safety concerns, but Free Tibet advocates say it's part of the effort to assimilate the area into the Communist Party.
