HOUSES ON A HILL

These colorful homes in China's Sichuan Province make up part of the Larung Gar Buddhist Academy, which teaches the tenets of Tibetan Buddhism. Once home to 40,000 monks, nuns, and disciples, it has now become a site of conflict. In the summer of 2016, the Chinese government demolished a large swath of the homes, citing safety concerns, but Free Tibet advocates say it's part of the effort to assimilate the area into the Communist Party.
