Hyderabad: With rain, returns the toxic froth

Admitting that frothing has now become a regular problem after the rains, N Raveendher, a senior environment scientist at TSPCB said that they have designed an action plan to control foam.

Hyderabad: It was a dreadful experience yet again for those living in and around or passing through Dharani Nagar Colony at Kukatpally on Saturday morning. The rains once again spread scare among locals as suspected toxic froth erupted in high volumes from the nearby water body and was carried by the wind onto the streets. “Every spell of rains bring the forth back and we remain worried about its impact on the health,” lamented M Naresh of Allwyn Colony.

The residents also said that they were taken aback by the lake frothing again, despite promises from the authorities on finding a solution to the problem. Admitting that the frothing has now become a regular problem after the rains, N Raveendher, a senior environment scientist at TSPCB said that they have designed an action plan to control foam.

“We suspect that the foam is due to the formation of ‘Filamentus Bacteria’ that forms from lack of oxygen in the water body. We are working on a long term solution, but for now, we have managed to reduce the froth by spraying anti-foaming agents,” Raveendher said. “About 50 to 60 kgs of anti-foaming chemical is being used to control the froth in the area,” he said.
