While the union government continuing to levy 12 per cent GST on the sanitary napkins, the Andhra Pradesh government has decided to provide sanitary napkins to school girls and women from self-help groups. The finance minister Yanamala Ramakrishnudu has announced a budgetary allocation of Rs 127 crore under two separate heads for sanitary napkins.

While presenting the budget, Ramakrishnudu said that girl students in high schools are facing problems during their menstrual periods because of the lack of awareness as well as being unable to afford sanitary napkins. This is one of the causes for the girl student drop outs in government schools which the government likes to address by supplying sanitary pads to them. He made a budgetary allocation of Rs 27 crore for providing sanitary napkins to the girl students in government schools.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday promised that sanitary pads would soon be available at half price.

Addressing the state assembly here on the occasion of International Women's Day, Naidu said his government has introduced a mechanism to check the health of pregnant women and newborn babies.

"We have brought a mechanism to check the health of pregnant women and newborn babies. We are implementing many schemes for their health and get rid of malnutrition.We have decided to supply sanitary pads at half the price. Soon the policy will be brought into implementation," he said.

"Trends will change. Days will come when grooms have to give dowry to brides. DWCRA groups are excelling in all manner. We are using them for poverty eradication," he added.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Chhattisgarh's social activist, late Kunwar Bai, who was chosen as a mascot for the 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan'

NEW DELHI: The government on Thursday launched biodegradable sanitary napkins, priced at Rs 2.50 per pad, on the eve of International Women's Day, which will be available at Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana Kendras.

The sanitary napkins will be available in a pack of four pads for Rs 10 across over 3,200 Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) Kendras by May 28, 2018, Minister of Chemicals and Fertilisers Ananth Kumar said today.

On the eve of Women's Day, the Department of Pharmaceuticals under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers is introducing sanitary napkins under the name 'Suvidha', he added.
