A family in Tennessee is suing TriStar Centennial hospital after their 73-year-old family relative died a month after a surgeon left a needle inside him. John Burns Johnson, 73, of Lafayette, had open heart surgery at TriStar. When the nine-hour surgery was completed the surgeon, Dr. Sreekumar Subramanian, realized not all of his needles were accounted for.

The surgeon re-opened Johnson, who underwent an additional three hours of surgery as the team tried to retrieve the needle, but they were ultimately unable to remove it.

The lawsuit says the surgeon closed Johnson's chest and rewired his sternum, leaving the needle inside.

'Mr. Johnson's condition continued to deteriorate over the next thirty days,' the lawsuit states, according to KGW8. 'He was critically ill and never saw his home again.'

'We take the responsibility of properly caring for our patients very seriously and empathize with the understandable grief being felt by the family,' the TriStar statement said.

Subramanian has a five star rating on the hospital's site and has no discipline cases against him.

The lawsuit was filed by Johnson's widow, son and daughter.

idi correct reaction ....... plus hospitals have insurance to pay for the damages claimed by the team ..... .unfortunate think is that there will be a team of 5-10 people in the room and have responsibilities ........  so one person has to check if all the equipment has come or not ....... all the slots are filled in the box she/he opened .....any slot is not filled they do not close the patient until they find that object

unfortunate thing is that that person would have gone through lot of pain before dying ........... very sad ..... painful death ..........
