I would recommend Whey Protein Isolate, generally has the most protein percentage, low carb/fat and is more lactose tolerant. 

If you're looking to build serious muscle, try to take around 1/2 to 1 gm protein per lb of your body weight per day.

Focus on getting most of your protein through whole foods but having 1 to 2 scoops (20 to 25 gms per scoop) of protein powder per day is fine.

You can have protein any time of the day as long as you're hitting your protein target, ideally breakfast or right after the workout. It is usually not recommended to have protein powder right before workout as it might make you uncomfortable during heavy lifts but YMMV

Diet is the most important thing one should focus on while building muscle or losing weight.

Make a habit of tracking your daily calories and meals by using a calorie tracking app (like My Fitness Pal) and try to set a goal and aim for it.
