es is schema less, like any other nosql dbs are. however, you can enforce schema in multiple ways. This is where logstash does its magic.

es index life cycle management: how to grow indices, as number of shards are fixed. Rolled over indices, hot vs cold architecture, etc.

 Kibana is just a web front end of es, just like splunk web interface.

logstash pushes the data to es, just as kinesis/kafka does.
