Black market gets a boost from Magadheera fans

Hyderabad: The first-day-first-show of the much-awaited film ‘Magadheera’ of Chiranjeevi’s son Ramcharan Teja had all the trappings of filmi drama and raucous fan frenzy across the state.

While angry film buffs who did not get the tickets staged rasta rokos and received lathi blows at some places on Friday, those who were lucky enough to obtain tickets thanks to their links with the fans associations jived in gay abandon to the remixed ‘Bangaru kodi petta’ song, which was a chartbuster in Chiranjeevi’s ‘Gharana Mogudu’ film in 1992, in the theatres across the state.

Police lathicharged several hundreds of fans at some of the theatres in Tirupati to control the mob. The fans destroyed the office room and ticket issue counter in a theatre forcing the cops to lathicharge. Six youths suffered bleeding injuries, while several others suffered minor injuries.

In Hyderabad, miffed fans resorted to Gandhigiri by staging a rasta roko when they didn’t get the tickets. Sources said with the fans associations and PRP leaders blocking the tickets in several theatres across the state for almost one week, the common viewers had to come back empty-handed. Serpentine queues were seen in front of ticket counters, while in Kakinada, Bhimavaram and other places there was a near stampede for the tickets.

Sources said the box tickets were purchased at Rs 4,000 to Rs 5,000 each in black in some of the theatres in the port city of Vizag, while it hovered between Rs 300 and Rs 500 in Tirupati, Nidadavolu, Tadepalligudem, Rajahmundry, Eluru, Guntur and other towns in Andhra region.

Meanwhile, with complaints pouring in over the non-availability of tickets for the film, the authorities have swung into action and warned the theatre managements to issue tickets at the counters to film lovers from Friday onwards to avoid blackmarketing. “Imagine our plight as Rs 10 ticket is being sold for Rs 200-Rs 300 and Rs 35 ticket for Rs 600,” a film lover said in Tirupati.

Guntur district joint collector Gaurav Uppal said the licences of the theatres would be cancelled if the managements do not sell tickets at the counters. He said the revenue officials would keep a watch on the ticket sales in all the theatres running ‘Magadheera.’ “If we come across any irregularities, we will take action against the theatre owners,” he warned.

Minister Kanna Lakshminarayana’s son Kanna Nagaraju meanwhile said he did not block the film shows in theatres but has only “recommended” a few tickets for his followers. Ramcharan’s buddy and hero Allu Arjun had one final word to say after watching the film in a crowded theatre in Hyderabad: “Magadheera will break all the box office records.” The film was released with 1,200 prints in 14 countries across the world.
