My roommate made good money on apple futures 2 years back ...  
 

in options trading you don’t buy actual stock, you buy an underlying contract saying at this point of time in future  I expect this stock or eft or something (even people bet on weather) at this price and you can either do either put or call . If it matches your bet you make money or u get a wonderful experience out of it.

If you are planning to inivest lot of money , suggest you have investment planner or buy some premium software from yahoo finance, etrades etc 

They will analyze your full money , risk you can afford to take so that scatter the investments across
